Cost Efficiency in HSR – A Spanish Showcase

Spain has the largest HSR network in the World, second only to China. This has given the country the knowledge and skills to develop, deliver and run, cost efficient infrastructure and services. As a comparison, the cost per km for building a new HSR line in Spain is only EUR 17.7m as opposed to EUR 45.5m average for other countries with HSR.

9:30 Accelerating High Speed Rail Programme Delivery
The increasing global need to deliver transformative transport schemes quickly and to budget is critical. Across Europe, North America, Middle East, Asia and Australasia the demand for rail, light rail/metro, freight and high speed is at an all time high. This places significant pressure on funding organisations and governments to clearly define the outputs, align stakeholders, set out objectives, budgets and programme targets. At the same time, the private sector faces ever growing pressure to absorb greater programme risks and to deliver integrated yet affordable solutions that can be delivered efficiently and to the high quality that the operators and passengers need. This presentation will look at the global demand for high speed/faster rail delivery, the approaches taken to shorten programme delivery and establish clear outputs. It will examine the steps delivery organisations around the world are taking to create greater standardisation, the benefits this brings to the whole life of a railway and its ability to achieve sustainable values on investment.

Improving cost effective delivery through technology – HSR Technology Showcase
2:45 Enhancing High-Speed Rail Through Advanced Signalling Systems and Communication Technologies
The evolution of High-Speed Rail (HSR) systems has been significantly influenced by advancements in signalling and communication technologies. These technologies not only enhance the efficiency and safety of rail operations but also play a crucial role in promoting sustainability within the rail industry.
  • This paper explores the critical importance of advanced signalling and communication systems in HSR and their contribution to sustainable operations. Signalling systems such as the European Train Control System (ETCS) and Chinese Train Control System (CTCS) enable precise train control, leading to optimized energy consumption and reduced environmental impact.
  • Next-generation communication technologies, including FRMCS, support real-time data transfer and operational coordination, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of rail services. The integration of IoT sensors and AI-driven data analytics further supports sustainable practices by facilitating predictive maintenance and dynamic energy management.
  • By improving operational efficiency and reducing energy use, these technologies help lower the carbon footprint of HSR. Enhanced reliability and punctuality of HSR systems encourage a modal shift from less sustainable transport options, further contributing to environmental sustainability.
  • Through case studies and best practices for HSR’s globally, the presentation will demonstrates how these technologies are being successfully implemented worldwide, setting a benchmark for the development of sustainable high-speed rail networks.
